Digital Foundry: Do PS5 Pro and Xbox Series Next need this generation?

Digital Foundry asked the question after the appearance of rumors about Sony and Microsoft plans to release improved (about twice) versions of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X-can these consoles even occupy a niche on the market, like PS4 Pro and Xbox One X?

After the appearance of the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, only three years after the release of the original consoles, it is reasonable to expect PS5 and XSX pro-versions, but not everything is so simple. The fact is that the cost of one transistor no longer falls as rapidly as before, despite the Law of Moore about their constant increase in quantity.

At the present time, the cost of the chips not only does not decrease, but sometimes even increases due to crises, which is unacceptable for the console market-the device should not be expensive as a PC, otherwise it will not be bought. In such circumstances, the release of pro-versions of the consoles loses all meaning.

Other reasons for the sooner appearance of pro-versions:

  • A year and a half has passed since the launch of the PS5 and XSX | S, however, games are still produced for the previous generation. At the time of the appearance of PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, this was not;

* There is no distribution of 8K displays. New iron is simply nothing to let out;
* Doubling of performance will cost companies much more than before;
* The world economic situation does not have people to buy new devices.

Thus, only the Nintendo Switch 2 should be expected to someday in 2025.
